NBA News: Celtics' Jayson Tatum agrees to 5-year, $314M deal

The biggest contract in NBA history, for $314 million over five years, has been agreed to by Boston Celtics standout Jayson Tatum, sources said ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.

According to insiders, the agreement contains a trade kicker and player option.

With a five-game NBA Finals triumph over the Dallas Mavericks, Tatum, 26, led Boston to its 18th NBA Championship. The Celtics moved beyond their bitter rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, for the most titles in league history. Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists.

10 Richest NBA Players in 2024

The 6-foot-9 forward, selected by the Celtics with the third overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, has emerged as one of the league's best two-way players on the wing.

On July 2 (Tuesday), he teamed up with Jaylen Brown, whom Boston signed to a record-breaking contract a year prior, to form what is arguably the best wing tandem in the league.

The Celtics combo now owns the two highest-valued contracts in NBA history combined.

Earlier on Monday, the Celtics also decided to extend their contract with guard Derrick White. All of Boston's starting players are now under contract through at least 2025–2026.

Tatum, Brown, White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis have contracts for a combined $198.5 million for that season alone.

Tatum has been selected to the All-NBA first team the last three seasons, and he is a five-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection.

He is scheduled to compete for Team USA at the summer Olympics in Paris as the men's national team attempts to capture a gold medal for the fifth time in a row, after his gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
