Now, Shonda Rhimes's passion for the game of golf will expand beyond just her play.
The newest investor in the Los Angeles Golf Club, the Los Angeles-based team of the future, tech-focused golf league, TGL, which intends to democratize the sport, is the TV creator behind hits like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and Bridgerton, according to hollywoodreporter.com.
Rhimes was instantly captivated by the idea of indoor team golf supported by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's TMRW Sports, having read any early articles about it. After moving to the east coast, she and one of her daughters had started taking golf lessons, and Rhimes soon developed a fervor for the game. She admits, laughing, "I don't know how to do anything halfway. It helped that I'm sort of naturally good at it, which is not something that I expected. After that, it was almost as if I was destined for this.
Before the TGL chance presented itself, Rhimes toyed with the notion of buying a professional basketball team, but this felt much more real. "Much more of me," she replies. She chose to invest in the L.A. squad because of the other investors, which included Serena's husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and the Williams sisters, even though she maintains that she couldn't be happier living 3,000 miles away from L.A. Soccer legend Alex Morgan and golfer Michelle Wie West are two more well-known supporters.
With the first season scheduled to begin in January 2025, more TGL franchises in the Bay Area, Boston, Atlanta, Jupiter, Florida, and New York have been confirmed. The games will all take place at the specially constructed SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and will be broadcast on ESPN and the streaming service ESPN+. It will have physical greens as well as cutting-edge simulators. As part of its continuous effort to increase accessibility to the sport, the Los Angeles club has previously pledged to donate 10% of sponsorship earnings to Southern California community-based initiatives.
The information is released while Rhimes is expanding her influence in the entertainment industry. Her company, Shondaland, has a presence in live events, cinema, television, podcasts, significant brand collaborations, and podcasts. It is currently in its second nine-figure arrangement with Netflix. (This is one of the reasons she was recognized as THR's TV icon lately.) In addition, Rhimes holds personal positions as a trustee of the American Film Institute (AFI), a member of the advisory council of the Obama Foundation, a board member of The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and her alma institution, Dartmouth.
